If you own or work in a hair salon, you know how quickly things can get messy. From tiny hair clippings in every nook and cranny to product residue accumulating on multiple surfaces, maintaining a clean and inviting space with a steady flow of clients can be challenging. But it’s a task that is incredibly important not just for aesthetics, but hygiene—so we’re sharing some practical cleaning tips we’ve honed over the years to keep your salon sparkling clean.
FLOORS: BATTLING HAIR & PRODUCT BUILD-UP
The floor of a hair salon is a magnet for hair, dyes, and various styling products. To tackle this, regular sweeping and vacuuming are your first line of defense. Sweeping around your station in between client appointments helps create an inviting atmosphere, and a more thorough vacuuming at least once daily helps fight hair build-up in the nooks and crannies. We recommend using a vacuum cleaner that’s up to the task of picking up hair without getting clogged.
Mop daily with a disinfectant solution to ensure any chemical spills or dye stains are promptly addressed (and of course, wipe up any big spills that happen throughout the day immediately). Consider using a microfiber mop, which not only cleans more effectively but also reduces the spread of germs. (PRO TIP: Adding a little hair conditioner to your mopping water can help prevent hair from sticking to the floor, making “sweep time” much easier!)
THE ENTRYWAY: CREATING A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE
First impressions are crucial, and the cleanliness of your salon entryway sets the tone for each client’s experience. Daily cleaning of this area is essential. Start with a doormat that can trap dirt effectively; it should be shaken out daily and washed weekly.
Clean your windows and glass doors at least twice a week to remove fingerprints and smudges that can make your salon look unkempt. If you have decorative items or furniture in the entryway, dust them daily, and polish as needed to keep them looking fresh and inviting. Remember, your entryway reflects the standard of your entire salon. (PRO TIP: Consider intermittently propping open a door or window and running a fan to circulate air and keep your space smelling fresh.)
SINKS & WORKSPACES: ENSURING HYGIENIC SERVICE
Sinks and workstations are where the magic happens, so they require meticulous attention. Sinks should be cleaned and disinfected after each use to prevent the buildup of hair and product residue, which can lead to clogs and unsanitary conditions. Use a non-abrasive, bleach-free cleaner that can tackle grime without damaging the surfaces (or your clients’ hair).
For countertops and workstations, use a disinfectant to wipe them down after each client. You might also consider a small hand vacuum to help remove stray hairs from tool holders and other surfaces in between appointments. And don’t forget about the mirrors—streak-free and sparkling mirrors can enhance the brightness of your salon, so clean them daily or more often if necessary. (PRO TIP: Consider purchasing small tables or stools for each workstation so clients have a mess-free spot to place their purses, cups, etc. while getting their hair done.)
HANDHELD TOOLS: MAINTAINING PRISTINE EQUIPMENT
Finally, let’s talk about your tools—scissors, combs, brushes, towels. Because of their constant use, these items can be a hotspot for germs if not cleaned properly. All tools should be cleaned and disinfected after each client. Immerse combs and brushes in a disinfectant solution for at least 10 minutes between uses. (Keep spares on hand so you always have a set ready to go.)
Scissors and other metal tools should be wiped down with alcohol in between uses. Towels should be used for one client only before being washed, and we recommend using a hot-water cycle with quality detergent to ensure product residue and germs are eliminated.
ELEVATE YOUR SALON BUSINESS
Cleaning may not be the most glamorous part of running a hair salon, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most crucial. By maintaining a clean environment, you not only comply with health regulations, but you elevate the client experience, which in the long run, benefits your business.
