Keeping Your Hair Salon Sparkling: Practical Cleaning Tips

April 30, 2024 by eric

If you own or work in a hair salon, you know how quickly things can get messy. From tiny hair clippings in every nook and cranny to product residue accumulating on multiple surfaces, maintaining a clean and inviting space with a steady flow of clients can be challenging. But it’s a task that is incredibly important not just for aesthetics, but hygiene—so we’re sharing some practical cleaning tips we’ve honed over the years to keep your salon sparkling clean.

FLOORS: BATTLING HAIR & PRODUCT BUILD-UP

The floor of a hair salon is a magnet for hair, dyes, and various styling products. To tackle this, regular sweeping and vacuuming are your first line of defense. Sweeping around your station in between client appointments helps create an inviting atmosphere, and a more thorough vacuuming at least once daily helps fight hair build-up in the nooks and crannies. We recommend using a vacuum cleaner that’s up to the task of picking up hair without getting clogged.

Mop daily with a disinfectant solution to ensure any chemical spills or dye stains are promptly addressed (and of course, wipe up any big spills that happen throughout the day immediately). Consider using a microfiber mop, which not only cleans more effectively but also reduces the spread of germs. (PRO TIP: Adding a little hair conditioner to your mopping water can help prevent hair from sticking to the floor, making “sweep time” much easier!)

THE ENTRYWAY: CREATING A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE

First impressions are crucial, and the cleanliness of your salon entryway sets the tone for each client’s experience. Daily cleaning of this area is essential. Start with a doormat that can trap dirt effectively; it should be shaken out daily and washed weekly.

Clean your windows and glass doors at least twice a week to remove fingerprints and smudges that can make your salon look unkempt. If you have decorative items or furniture in the entryway, dust them daily, and polish as needed to keep them looking fresh and inviting. Remember, your entryway reflects the standard of your entire salon. (PRO TIP: Consider intermittently propping open a door or window and running a fan to circulate air and keep your space smelling fresh.)

SINKS & WORKSPACES: ENSURING HYGIENIC SERVICE

Sinks and workstations are where the magic happens, so they require meticulous attention. Sinks should be cleaned and disinfected after each use to prevent the buildup of hair and product residue, which can lead to clogs and unsanitary conditions. Use a non-abrasive, bleach-free cleaner that can tackle grime without damaging the surfaces (or your clients’ hair).

For countertops and workstations, use a disinfectant to wipe them down after each client. You might also consider a small hand vacuum to help remove stray hairs from tool holders and other surfaces in between appointments. And don’t forget about the mirrors—streak-free and sparkling mirrors can enhance the brightness of your salon, so clean them daily or more often if necessary. (PRO TIP: Consider purchasing small tables or stools for each workstation so clients have a mess-free spot to place their purses, cups, etc. while getting their hair done.)

HANDHELD TOOLS: MAINTAINING PRISTINE EQUIPMENT

Finally, let’s talk about your tools—scissors, combs, brushes, towels. Because of their constant use, these items can be a hotspot for germs if not cleaned properly. All tools should be cleaned and disinfected after each client. Immerse combs and brushes in a disinfectant solution for at least 10 minutes between uses. (Keep spares on hand so you always have a set ready to go.)

Scissors and other metal tools should be wiped down with alcohol in between uses. Towels should be used for one client only before being washed, and we recommend using a hot-water cycle with quality detergent to ensure product residue and germs are eliminated.

ELEVATE YOUR SALON BUSINESS

Cleaning may not be the most glamorous part of running a hair salon, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most crucial. By maintaining a clean environment, you not only comply with health regulations, but you elevate the client experience, which in the long run, benefits your business.

FROM FUR-COVERED TO FRESH: A PET-OWNER’S GUIDE TO A CLEAN HOUSE

March 30, 2024 by eric

From the soft purrs and wagging tails to the scattered toys and surprise messes, our four-legged companions add joy—and a bit of a cleaning challenge—to our daily lives. Here are our tips for maintaining a clean and cozy home without compromising love and care of our furry family members.

Floors, Furniture, and Fur

Let’s face it: our pets love to lounge just as much as we do, often leaving behind a generous amount of fur on the furniture and carpets. Combatting pet hair might seem like a herculean task, but with the right approach, it’s more than manageable.

Investing in a high-quality vacuum designed for pet hair can make a world of difference. For furniture, a simple yet effective tool is a dampened rubber glove; simply running your hand over the fabric can miraculously collect pet hair. Additionally, strategic placement of washable throws or pet beds can localize shedding, making cleanup a breeze.

Organizing Pet Gear

From leashes and harnesses to toys and food dishes, pet gear can easily clutter your space if not organized properly. That’s why creating a dedicated “pet station” can be a game-changer. Use hooks or a small storage unit to hang leashes and harnesses. Invest in a toy box specifically for your pet’s toys. (If you have a highly intelligent dog, you might even try training them to return their toys after playtime—which not only keeps the floor tidy but alleviates boredom in super-smart breeds.) As for food and water dishes, placing them on an easy-to-clean mat can prevent spills and crumbs from spreading across your floor. And remember to wash these dishes regularly to ensure they remain hygienic and odor-free.

The Great Outdoors… Indoors

Pets who love to explore (i.e., dig in, roll around in, and run through) the great outdoors often bring back “souvenirs” in the form of dirt and debris. To combat this, consider placing a mat both outside and inside your door to catch as much dirt as possible. When it’s rainy outside, keep an old towel handy to wipe down your pet’s paws and prevent unwanted paw prints in your home. If your dog is prone to rolling in dead grass or leaves, keep a brush handy to give them a quick wipe-down before they come inside.

Bonus Hack: Odor Control

For lingering pet odors, consider natural odor eliminators like baking soda or vinegar. Sprinkling baking soda on carpets before vacuuming can absorb odors, and a diluted vinegar solution can be used to clean hard surfaces without leaving a lingering scent. For a fresh and inviting aroma, try using a pet-safe air purifier or diffusing essential oils that are safe for pets (like lavender). And of course, the cleaner your pet is (hello, bath time!), the less likely they are to make the rest of the house smell… less-than-inviting.

A Labor of Love

Maintaining a clean home with pets is indeed a labor of love, but it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With these practical tips and a bit of habit tweaking, you can enjoy a clean, tidy home that’s ready to welcome both two-legged and four-legged family members.

Here at Kingdom Keepers, we understand the unique challenges pet owners face, and we’re here to help make them a little less challenging. Contact us today to receive a free estimate for our residential cleaning services. After all, a clean home is a happy home—for you and your furry friends.

“You Missed A Spot”: 12 Places In Your Home You Need To Clean This Spring

February 29, 2024 by eric

If you take pride in keeping your home clean but sometimes wonder if you’re overlooking certain spots, you’re not alone. We’re here to shed some light on those often neglected areas in your home that are silently begging for attention. So grab your favorite cleaning supplies, and get ready for a truly deep clean.

Living Room: Where All the Living Happens

Ah, the living room—where memories are made and relaxation reigns supreme. But amidst the coziness, some areas might not be getting the love they deserve.

It’s important to use the right filter because a lesser product may not capture all of the allergens in your home. If your vacuum isn’t properly equipped, it could do more harm than good by simply stirring up irritants and sending them into the air. Vacuum your home twice a week to keep dust, dander, mold, mildew, and other allergens to a minimum.

  • Ceiling Fans: Out of sight, out of mind, right? Not quite. Ceiling fans collect a significant amount of dust that can circulate throughout the room each time you turn them on. Keeping them clean ensures fresher air and a healthier environment for your family.
  • Behind the TV Stand: This miniature indoor canyon can turn into a treasure trove of dust, hair, and lost items (particularly if you have small children and/or pets). Cleaning here can not only reduce allergens but also protect your electronic devices from overheating due to dust accumulation.
  • Sofa and Chair Cushions: These areas are notorious for accumulating crumbs, pens, chapstick, remotes… if it fits in your pocket, it might be hiding in your couch. Grab your vacuum, snap on the skinny nozzle, and give your cushions a good once-over.

Kitchen: The Workhorse of Your Home

Your kitchen is more than just a place for cooking; it’s a hub for family gatherings and late-night snacks. But this high-traffic area has a few places that often go uncleaned.

  • Behind the Refrigerator: An out-of-sight spot that can harbor dust, grime, and even pests. Cleaning here improves ventilation for your fridge, helping it run more efficiently.
  • The Dishwasher’s Edges: Food particles and moisture can create a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Keeping this area clean ensures your dishes come out sparkling and hygienic.
  • Under the Sink: This often-overlooked area can become a collection point for moisture and leakage (and sometimes spilled cleaning products), leading to mold growth. Regular checks and clean-ups can prevent potential water damage and health issues.

Bathroom: The In-Home Spa

The room in which your family gets clean is ironically (or perhaps consequently) one of the germier areas of the home. This is a room where it’s especially important to reach all the hidden nooks and crannies.

  • Behind the Toilet: It’s easy to miss, yet this area can accumulate grime and bacteria, contributing to unpleasant odors and an unclean appearance.
  • The Exhaust Fan: Essential for ventilation and mold prevention—yet often forgotten. A clean exhaust fan works more efficiently, keeping your bathroom fresh and mold
  • Shower–Curtain Liner: Soap scum and mildew love to hide here. Regular cleaning or replacement can keep your bathroom looking and smelling clean.

Bedroom: (what should be) Your Restful Sanctuary

Your bedroom should be the epitome of comfort and relaxation. Yet even here, there are areas that may be silently accumulating dust and allergens.

  • Under the Bed: A haven for dust bunnies (yes, even if you have carpet), lost socks, and other miscellaneous clutter. Cleaning this area can significantly reduce allergens, making for a more restful sleep.
  • Window Tracks: These can gather dust and mold if not cleaned regularly, affecting air quality and the overall freshness of your room.
  • Top of Wardrobes and Cabinets: Another out-of-sight spot that’s easy to ignore but can collect a surprising amount of dust over time.

Why These Spots Matter

Cleaning these often overlooked areas is about much more than keeping a spotless house; it’s about creating a healthier, more efficient home. Dust and grime can lead to a host of respiratory problems, while overlooked leaks, moisture, and dust build-up can lead to costly issues like overheated or clogged appliances, mold growth, and even structural damage.

So, tending to all the nooks and crannies not only elevates the cleanliness of your home but improves the energy and wellbeing of everyone—and everything—who lives there.

That said, it can be hard to find time for a deep clean when you’re busy with work, family, and life. If you want help tackling those hard-to-reach spots, we’re here for you! Contact us today to receive a free estimate for our residential cleaning services.

How to Organize Your Kid’s Room & Keep It Tidy

January 31, 2024 by eric

Keeping a child’s room organized can be quite the juggling act. If your home sometimes looks like a toy store that exploded, fear not—we have some space-efficient hacks to make organizing a breeze (and fun!).

1. Start with Toys

Toys are generally the primary culprit when it comes to messy kids’ rooms, but with a little creativity, you can restore order to playtime.

● Sort with Style: Use cute bins or baskets and sort toys into categories like action figures, puzzles, doll accessories, etc. For little ones, picture labels work wonders—you can turn clean-up time into a game where everything has its place.

● Use Magnets: For the little collectors in your home, install magnetic strips on a wall or the side of a cabinet. It’s a perfect way to display and organize metal cars, magnetic letters, and other small items that otherwise find their way under beds or shoved haphazardly in drawers. This method not only saves space but turns their collection into a unique, interactive wall feature.

● Rotate Toys: Kids can become overwhelmed—and even easily bored—when faced with a wide selection of toys. To maximize space and creativity, store excess toys in a separate closet or attic and rotate which toys your child has in their room. It keeps their space uncluttered and they get to enjoy the excitement of a “new” toy every few weeks.

2. Clean Up the Clothes

Growing kids means constantly changing wardrobes. Here’s how to store your kids’ clothes efficiently:

● Off-Season=Out of Sight: Use under-the-bed storage for clothes that are currently out of season. It makes choosing outfits simpler and your child’s closet and dresser less cluttered.

● Divide and Conquer: Drawer dividers are a game-changer for kids’ dressers. Use them to separate socks, underwear, and other small items. This makes it easy for your kids to find what they need without turning the drawer into a jumble.

● Maximize Space: Most closets have extra wall or floor space that typically goes unused. Depending on the size of your child’s closet, you can add anything from wall hooks (for hats and scarves) to shoe racks, or even a set of drawers to add storage.

3. Master the Miscellaneous Mess

We get it—sometimes your kid’s room looks like one giant junk drawer of uncategorized chaos. Here are some tips for organizing and storing all the miscellaneous “stuff.”

● Use Over-the-Door Organizers: Designed to hold shoes, these pockets are a great way to store and sort lots of different items. Think arts and crafts supplies, accessories for different toys, even tech gadgets. It’s all about giving each item its own space.

● Leverage Vertical Space: Installing floating shelves can be a great way to display and store small toys. Tall bookshelves are also a stylish and convenient way to store toys (in bins) as well as books. Just be sure that everything is set up safely for little ones (e.g., anchoring tall furniture to the wall).

● Use a Storage Bench: Storage benches can be helpful for stowing away larger toys that don’t fit under the bed or in a bin. Plus, they’re neutral enough to use in an older child’s room, unlike a traditional “toy box.”

Make It Fun

However you decide to organize, make it fun and uncomplicated, and try to involve your kids as much as possible. Not only does this teach children valuable life skills, but it also makes them more likely to keep things tidy.

Winter Is The New Spring: Why Deep Cleaning Should Be Your New Cold-Weather Hobby

December 29, 2023 by eric

Forget waiting for spring; we say winter is the unsung hero of deep cleaning and home organization. After all, who wants to be inside dusting when the flowers are finally blooming?

For this blog, we’ll discuss some practical winter cleaning projects that will not only rid your home of those pesky germs but refresh your living space so you can truly enjoy snuggling up indoors this winter.

Create Space for Comfort

Winter is the perfect season to declutter. Everyone is nestled indoors, making it easier to spot what’s no longer serving you. Plus, Christmas usually brings a lot of new “stuff,” and a family purging session can be a great way to start fresh in the new year.

When you declutter, you’re not just cleaning up; you’re creating a vibe. It’s a chance to make your space more you. And the best part? You don’t have to do it all in one go. Tackle one room, one drawer, one shelf, one folder at a time. Before you know it, you’ll have a space that’s less about mess and more about living. We recommend starting with the family room, where you likely spend most of your cozy evenings. Sort through books, magazines, board games, and DVDs (if you still own any!)—keep what you love and donate or recycle what you don’t.

Attack Overlooked Areas

Now, let’s talk about those neglected spaces. (We’re looking at you, under-the-bed cave and behind-the-furniture gap!) These are the hidden realms where dust bunnies and crumbs love to party, and winter is the ideal time to move furniture and get to those hard-to-reach spots.

Pull out those vacuum attachments you’ve never used (they’re not just for decoration!) and channel your inner ghostbuster, going after dust and allergens hiding in the carpet and woodwork. Those long, skinny nozzles? They’re great for sneaking into the tight spots between couch cushions or along the base of stair steps. The brush attachment? Perfect for scrubbing caked dust off of baseboards and molding.

Pro Tip: While you’re at it, give your floors some extra love—sprinkle baking soda on the carpet before you vacuum to neutralize odors. If you have hardwood or tile, a nice mopping with a mix of warm water and vinegar can do wonders. This kind of deep cleaning can make a significant difference in the air quality of your home, which is especially important in the winter months when windows are seldom open.

Refresh Your Closet

Revamping your closet is about so much more than organization; it’s about starting your day with less stress and more joy. Take a moment to assess your wardrobe—if an item doesn’t fit, you haven’t worn it in a year, or you just don’t love it, consider donating it.

Once you’ve streamlined your wardrobe, organize your closet in a way that makes sense for your daily routine (color-coordinated tops, anyone?). To save space and create order, consider adding accessories like multilevel hangers for pants and scarves or shelf dividers to keep your sweaters from toppling into chaos. Don’t forget about your shoes—clear boxes or a hanging organizer can turn a mountain of mismatched footwear into a navigable display.

Declutter, Deep Clean, and Decompress

This winter, take advantage of your time indoors to create a living space you love. (Your future self will thank you, especially if we get hit with an infamous Oklahoma ice storm and you’re stuck inside for days!) Whether you deep clean or declutter (or both), creating a tidier home isn’t just about appearances; it’s about making a space where you can relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy the winter season to its fullest.

The Art of Green Cleaning in Your Kitchen

November 30, 2023 by eric

In the heart of every home, the kitchen stands as a bustling hub of activity. It’s where meals are crafted, memories are made, and inevitably, messes occur. And in today’s eco-conscious world, the approach to cleaning this hub of the home is shifting. Trends are moving toward greener, more sustainable cleaning practices, especially in the kitchen.

But the room in which you prepare food is the last place you want to compromise sanitation—so how do you transition to a greener cleaning routine without sacrificing safety? Here are some tips for green cleaning in your kitchen to transform your home into an environmentally friendly—and spotless—haven.

What is Green Cleaning?

“Green cleaning” refers to using cleaning products with environmentally friendly ingredients that are designed to preserve human health and environmental quality. These products avoid harsh chemicals, opting for natural, biodegradable components. In the kitchen, that might mean swapping conventional cleaners for those made with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils.

Benefits of Green Cleaning

Making the switch to green cleaning has several benefits:

  • Healthier Home Environment: Traditional cleaning products often contain harmful chemicals that can linger in the air and on surfaces, posing health risks for your family and pets. Green products reduce exposure to toxic substances.
  • Environmental Impact: Green cleaning reduces water and air pollution and minimizes your carbon footprint.
  • Economic Benefits: Many green cleaning solutions can be made from everyday household ingredients, potentially saving you money.

Essential Green Cleaning Products for Your Kitchen

To start your green cleaning journey, stock your kitchen with these key items:

  • White Vinegar: A natural disinfectant great for cleaning countertops and appliances, and even unclogging drains.
  • Baking Soda: Excellent for scrubbing surfaces and removing tough stains.
  • Lemon Juice: Its acidic properties make it effective for cutting through grease, and it leaves a fresh scent.
  • Castile Soap: A versatile, plant-based soap that can be used for washing dishes and surfaces.
  • Essential Oils: Not only do they add a pleasant aroma, but some oils like tea tree and lavender have antibacterial properties.

Transitioning to a Green Cleaning Routine

To start your green cleaning journey, stock your kitchen with these key items:

  • Start Small: Begin by replacing one or two conventional products with green alternatives. As you adjust, continue to incorporate more green products.
  • DIY Solutions: Experiment with making your own cleaners. A simple mixture of vinegar, water, and lemon can be an effective all-purpose cleaner.
  • Read Labels: When purchasing cleaning products, look for those with eco-friendly certifications.
  • Mindful Practices: Green cleaning isn’t just about the products; it’s also about the methods. Try reusable cloths instead of paper towels, and don’t leave the tap running unnecessarily.
  • Educate and Involve the Family: Share the importance of green cleaning with your family and get them involved in the process.

We’re here to help

Some might worry that green cleaners are less effective, but with the right ingredients and techniques, they can be just as efficient as traditional cleaners. Plus, many mainstream stores now carry a range of green cleaning products. And while some eco-friendly cleaners may be pricier, homemade solutions offer a cost-effective alternative.

Green cleaning in your kitchen is a meaningful step toward a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. By embracing eco-friendly cleaning products and practices, you can transform your kitchen into a clean, safe, and environmentally conscious space. If you’re looking for some extra help to make your home or business green clean, Kingdom Keepers can help! To learn more about our Green Cleaning Package, contact us today.
